Why do we learn how to improve our creativity? This, I remember, was the question that came to my mind when I was still a kid, my parents used to encourage and expose me to creative activities such as attending art and craft class or mathematical class. Now, I know why.
Creativity is our strong successful key in our lives in which helping us to solving difficulties, not only improving our thinking ability. As George Lois, an award-winning art director and designer said, “Creativity can solve almost any problem. The creative act, the defeat of habit by originality, overcomes everything”. When in primary and secondary school, we are introduced to language and basic conventions of grammar, then subjects like physic, chemistry, history and literature. All of these subjects encourage the development of our left brain. In order to have a balance and healthy development of our brain, other creative lessons like art and craft class, music lesson and co curriculum activities are needed to develop the right brain. A creative person is required to use both brains in order to make he or she self wiser, smart and more creative.
All sorts of new knowledge and skills of the lesson pave the way to develop our minds. Take for example, in my first lesson of the creative thinking and concept development course, we are being introduced the meaning of creative, creativity and idea. We learn to develop creative thinking by changing personal believe system and discover that there are many ways to improve creativity of a person. The students are not only need to try to learn from the Gurus (by looking at the particular quotes), but also absorb as much facts, information, knowledge and experience as possible with the time we have for inspiring us to creative thinking. Of course, we can only depend on ourselves. We have to be well-disciplined and trained hard to achieve competence. And develop our attitude, characteristic and thinking skills.
It is in this course of creative thinking and concept development that I learn the marvellous six thinking hats (by Edward de Bono) in problem solving and a proper way to draw out the mind-map (by Tonay Buzen). Besides this, we develop creative thinking and possibilities when we are introduced different fun class activities such as complete the half-sentences and thinking of the functionality of particular object like paper clip and so on. We also learn 10 idea generation techniques to help us to identify particular print ad and how to create new and creative ideas such as visual metaphor, visual simile, replacement winner, and think from many different perspectives and so on.
Each lesson of this course is important, I’m benefited. Let’s take mind-mapping. By learning the mind-mapping, we not only can enlist the possibility and expand our ideas, but also stimulate our memory to store more facts and make use of mind-mapping for making notes from secondary research. Although I learn the lessons and knowledge, there is still much more work to be done on this learning, I mean practice what I have learn in our daily activities. If we can apply what we have learnt, then all of us will be benefited from the lesson and the outcomes or colours of creative thinking bring into our lives. In short, creative thinking is one of the keys to achievements and accomplishments.
